Cultural Competence

Cultural Competence

  • Duration:
  • Price: $ 85.00

As mental health professionals, we are called upon to understand diverse cultural, historical, social, and economic backgrounds which inform behavior and, often without conscious awareness, both in our clients and in ourselves. In our progressively global world, mental health are providers are increasingly interacting with a range of individuals and families whose race, culture, living circumstances, gender and family composition are different than their own. Individuals and families seeking help may have differing views of what matters most to them, and may have assumptions about what the mental health care provider can offer, therefore influencing how the therapeutic relationship develops, impacting the effectiveness of interventions, and effecting wellbeing.

This series offers thought-provoking presentations with distinguished clinicians and researchers who will consider how cultural messages indoctrinate therapists to particular world views, and how these impact the practice of psychotherapy. A clear focus will help therapists understand how diverse populations view mental health, and the related challenges this can present in therapy. Participants will receive specific strategies they can utilize to integrate culture and context into their practice more effectively, allowing them to further connect with and empower clients. Mental health practitioners, including psychologists, marriage and family therapists, clinical social workers, psychiatrists, counselors, teachers and others, will benefit from this intermediate-level presentation of new research, discussion of clinical applications, and dialogue between our distinguished faculty.
